Horizon Drive Bridge Railing

Request for Qualifications for commissioning artwork(s) for the Horizon Drive District in Grand Junction, Colorado. The Horizon Drive District is partnering with the City of Grand Junction and the Colorado Department of Transportation for reconstruction of Horizon Drive at the I-70 overpass. The project seeks commissioned artwork to enhance the Horizon Drive experience and conceal the unattractive bridge spans and guard rails as viewed from Horizon Drive. The artwork will span Horizon Drive at two locations, adjacent to or mounted to the two most visible spans of the Interstate overpass bridges. The artwork may be abstract, geometric, or themed to support the sculptural metal horse and horse murals within the roundabouts and along the underpass bridge abutments.

The artwork will be viewed from vehicles, buses, bicycles, and by pedestrians along this multi-modal transportation corridor. The design should be very durable, require minimal maintenance, and be resistant to theft, vandalism, and weathering. It should not cause any safety hazard for traffic or pedestrians and should adhere to the highest standards of quality, timelessness, permanence, and general appeal. Works in a variety of media and forms will be considered, including metal, stone, concrete, fiberglass, and wire rope.

The project is open to all artists, architects, engineers, and landscape architects age 21 and over. Entries must show images of original creations similar in intent and size to this project. Selection will be based on past experience, style, concept, ability to comply with the timeline, and references. The HDD budget for this project is estimated at approximately $100,000, which includes all costs associated with the project including artist's design fee, travel, materials, fabrication costs, structural design, insurance, documentation, and transportation and installation of the work.
