About This Call
The City of Hopkins is seeking proposals for murals to be completed at two key locations in the city. This public art opportunity will support the community of Hopkins through creative placemaking.
Site 1 is located at the Twin Cities & Western Railroad bridge at 11th Avenue South. The mural would cover the entire East side of the underpass and the northern face of the West side, with approximate dimensions of 1,100 sq. ft. on the east side and 200 sq. ft. on the west side. This location serves as a gateway to South Hopkins, a culturally-diverse neighborhood where 20% of the city's population live. The mural should create excitement about entering the neighborhood and reward pedestrians and bicyclists passing through the area. Target ambience: Celebratory and Welcoming.
Site 2 is located at Vail Place (23 9th Ave S, Hopkins, MN 55343), on the wall of Vail Communities, a local nonprofit providing community-based recovery services. The wall is approximately 30' x 10' (300 sq. ft.) and ideally would wrap slightly around the building. The mural should enhance or uphold Vail Place values and be visible from the adjacent Artery. Target ambience: Inclusive, Celebratory, and Welcoming.
Budget: Site One up to $40,000; Site Two up to $20,000. Up to three artists or artist teams will be selected as finalists for each location and receive $1,000 honorarium to develop their concept and designs. Finalists will present refined proposals to the Hopkins Public Art Committee and other stakeholders.
Eligibility: Open to all U.S. artists with at least three examples of previously completed murals demonstrating the ability to create large scale, durable public art. Submit a minimum of 5 images (maximum 15) of at least three previously completed murals, resume or C.V., written description of intended concept, and proposed budget. Entry deadline: 6/28/24 at 11:59 p.m. MDT.
