About This Call
The City of Hopkins is seeking proposals for a series of small murals to be completed at three key locations in the city. Hopkins, Minnesota, located 15 minutes from downtown Minneapolis, is seeking to support the community through creative placemaking at key sites where public art can meet specific goals including highlighting or supporting cultural and ecological assets, adding to the art scene, and emphasizing the importance of birds in community life.
The Hopkins Bird Mural Project is intended to draw attention to birds threatened by climate change. Each mural must be a minimum of 2' x 2' and depict at least one bird species identified as 'High Vulnerability' in the area by the National Audubon Society. Three sites are available: Site 1 at 923 Mainstreet (west facing façade, niche spaces approximately 101" tall by 77" wide with 53" spacing between niches); Site 2 at 824 Mainstreet (niches in west facing façade, approximately 26" tall by 29" wide); and Site 3 at 723 Mainstreet (angled façade, approximately 63" tall by 84" wide). The Hopkins Public Art Advisory Committee will select up to three Artists/Artist Teams. Compensation is up to $2,000 per site. The City of Hopkins will provide in-kind assistance including logistics support, access to water, material storage, and help making the space safe with traffic management.
Artists must submit a minimum of 5 and maximum of 15 images of realized artwork (preference given to previously completed murals), a resume or C.V., a written description of the intended mural concept including bird species to be depicted, and a proposed budget. This opportunity is open to artists living in Minnesota, with preference given to residents of Hopkins and Hopkins Center for the Arts Member Artists. Artists will be notified of results by June 30, 2025, with murals to be completed by August 31, 2025.
