About This Call

The Honolulu Authority for Rapid Transportation (HART) is seeking professional artist services for the design, fabrication and installation of site-specific integrated artworks for twenty-one stations and the Maintenance and Storage Facility (MSF) for the Honolulu Rail Transit Project (HRTP). Professional artists and artist teams must submit qualifications to be selected for inclusion into HART's Pre-Qualified Artist Registry, from which HART will evaluate and select artists for all HRTP Art-in-Transit opportunities for the entire duration of the project.

The HRTP is a twenty-mile grade-separated fixed guideway transit system between East Kapolei and Ala Moana Center. The guideway will be elevated except near Leeward Community College where it will be at-grade, incorporating steel wheel on steel rail technology. The system will include twenty-one stations, one MSF, and approximately eighty light metro vehicles. Station platforms are 240 feet in length and approximately 14 feet wide, with amenities including canopies, signage, benches, and patron assistance phones. The MSF is a forty-three acre facility with an Operations Service Building of approximately 131,500 square feet.

The general goals of the Art-in-Transit Project are to commission artwork of the highest aesthetic standards visible to riders and the community; create a unique identity for stations and communities; embrace the history, cultures, traditions and character of surrounding communities; enhance the experience of transit patrons; and enhance regional tourism. Selected artists will collaborate closely with HART staff and design consultants through in-person meetings to develop conceptual designs, conduct research on the physical, social, historical and cultural context of project sites, and integrate artwork into architectural and engineering drawings throughout all design phases. The full scope of work, schedule and cost will be negotiated with selected artists in accordance with Hawaii Revised Statutes, Hawaii Administrative Rules and applicable Federal requirements. Applications must be submitted through the Call for Entry (CaFÉ) online application system. The application deadline is June 27, 2013 at 7:59 p.m. Hawaii Standard Time (11:59 p.m. Mountain Standard Time). Ten images are required.
