About This Call

The City and County of Honolulu Commission on Culture and the Arts is commissioning a work of art for the Waianae Police Station Replacement building located at 85-939 Farrington Highway, Waianae, Hawaii 96792. The project budget is $80,000, all-inclusive, covering artist fees, travel, fabrication, installation, documentation, signage, taxes, and insurance. One artwork location has been designated: a decorative band area 65 feet wide by 5 feet high between the first and second floors on the building's east elevation. The artwork may be a fresco, frieze, mosaic, mural, sculpture, or other wall-mounted work of art that is permanently installed and must be of durable material.

The goal of this artwork project is to tell a story of the Waianae, Oahu area and enhance the exterior of the building. All artists able to qualify to work for the City and County of Honolulu are eligible to apply, including professional artists new to public art. Artist teams may apply with a lead artist. All applicants must attest they are eighteen years of age or older and that submitted materials are authentic representations of their work.

Applications must be submitted through the CallforEntry.org online system by January 13, 2016 at 7:59 p.m. Hawaii Standard Time. Applicants may submit up to 6 additional images along with a letter of interest, professional resume, references, project proposal, preliminary budget and timeline, and up to 2 project illustration images. Three finalists will be selected and may present proposals to the Commission on Culture and the Arts. All finalists receive a $400 honorarium. Final selection will be made by the Commission in July 2016. Committee review occurs February through March 2016, with finalist notification in April 2016.
