About This Call

The City and County of Honolulu Commission on Culture and the Arts seeks to commission an exterior work of art for the new Hau'ula Fire Station, located at 54-282 Kamehameha Highway, Hau'ula, O'ahu, Hawai'i 96717. This Request for Qualifications is open to all artists or artist teams qualified to work for the City and County of Honolulu. The awarded budget for this project is $72,000.00, all-inclusive, covering artist's fees, travel, fabrication, installation, documentation, signage, taxes, and insurance.

The artwork will be affixed to a free-standing exterior concrete masonry unit wall approximately six feet high in two sections joined with an outside corner. The long leg is 35 feet wide and faces east towards Kamehameha Highway; the short leg is 22 feet wide and faces south towards Kawaipuna Street. The Commission on Culture and the Arts suggests that the theme of the work relate to the name of Hau'ula or the area of the Kaipapa'u Ahupua'a in the Ko'olauloa District.

One image may be an artwork concept illustration for this project. All artists must be eighteen years of age or older and attest that submitted materials are authentic representations of their work. To work for the City and County of Honolulu, artists must register with the City's Vendor Self Service System and obtain a Vendor Number. Three finalists will be selected to create art project proposals and present at a public meeting of the Commission on Culture and the Arts. All finalists will receive a $1,000.00 honorarium.
