About This Call
The City of Holladay is seeking an artist or team to create a large public art installation for the Holladay Village Plaza, located at the northwest intersection of 2300 E and Holladay Murray Boulevard in Holladay, Utah. The plaza, built in 2012, features a large round stepped platform approximately 20 feet in diameter and 3 feet off the ground, designated as the site for this inaugural public art project. The plaza is bordered by restaurants, shops, and businesses, with City Hall directly to the north. The area serves as a community gathering place for shopping, dining, arts events, and seasonal celebrations.
The Selection Committee envisions artwork inspired by Holladay's natural geography, including its abundant tree canopy, streams, creeks, and proximity to mountain flora and fauna. The Committee cannot entertain works that incorporate actual water but welcomes artistic interpretation of these resources. The artwork should appeal to people of all ages, encourage civic pride, and create a focal point and landmark for the plaza. It must be safe, durable, and easily maintained to withstand temperature variations (approximately 10 degrees to 105 degrees) and weather conditions including direct sun, rain, snow, wind, and ice. Creative, subtle lighting features integrated into the artwork are welcome if they require minimal maintenance.
Eligibility is open to resident American or legal resident artists and artist teams. Utah artists are strongly encouraged to apply. The entry deadline is May 27, 2022 at 11:59 p.m. MDT. Semi-finalists will be selected and paid an honorarium to develop full proposals including concept, budget, and timeline. Final selection is anticipated to be made from semi-finalists, with installation targeted for September 2023 or earlier. Work samples should include 3-10 images and up to 1 video. The project budget is $175,000.
