About This Call

Mt. San Antonio College is commissioning an artist or artist team to create a bronze sculpture of former track coach Hilmer Lodge for placement at the entrance of Hilmer Lodge Stadium. The sculpture should be slightly larger than life size, approximately 6'-4" in height with a 6-inch integral bronze plinth, and should possess interactive aspects that encourage patrons to walk around or become part of the artwork. The sculpture should depict Coach Lodge's likeness, including his charismatic smile and familiar stance holding a stopwatch, and must be durable with minimal ongoing maintenance requirements.

The selection process occurs in two rounds. Round #1 artists will be shortlisted based on qualifications, relevant experience, past projects, client references, and experience with life-size sculpture. Up to three shortlisted artists will each receive an honorarium of $3,000 and will be required to submit a detailed design and an original maquette (minimum 18" in height) within 5 weeks. The final selected artist will receive $15,000 to complete the full-sized sculpture and plinth, ready for molding and delivery to Art Bronze, Inc. Mt. SAC will contract separately for structural engineering and will construct the concrete pad and handle costs for molding, casting, assembly, finishing, patina, transportation, and installation. The artwork must meet California Building Code and Division of the State Architect requirements and be self-supporting on a hardscape surface.

Applications must include a portfolio of 4-15 media samples (images, audio, or video), a current resume, a one-page letter of interest, an annotated image list, and at least three professional references. All materials must be submitted electronically through CaFÉ by July 3, 2019 at midnight MST. There is no application fee. Shortlisted artists will be announced July 11, 2019, with the final artist selected August 23, 2019. Artwork fabrication is scheduled for December 2, 2019 through March 2, 2020, with installation beginning March 3, 2020 and completion by April 10, 2020.
