Hilltop Community Center Mural RFQ

The City of Wichita invites professional artists and artist teams with experience completing large-scale outdoor murals to submit qualifications for a $10,000 public art commission for the Hilltop Community Center in Wichita, Kansas. The mural will be painted on the exterior corrugated metal walls of the building (200' x 250' x 25'), located at 1329 South Terrace adjacent to Friendship Park in the historic Hilltop neighborhood. Project execution is scheduled to begin in Winter 2025 and be completed in Spring 2026. Emerging artists and artists with a strong public engagement practice are encouraged to apply.

The City of Wichita envisions a painted mural thematically rooted in the active and connected Hilltop community, representing the neighborhood's unique activities and concerns: animal advocacy, community gardens, bee keeping, history of aircraft workers, and community celebrations/gatherings. The mural may wrap around the building or be located on one or more exterior facades.

The $10,000 art budget is inclusive of all costs for the artist to execute the project from design through site preparation, materials, equipment, and execution. Installation will be coordinated with the project team and may be part of the artist fee depending on requirements. Applicants will be selected based on artistic excellence, creative process, demonstrated experience in mural art and outdoor durability, ability to deliver contractual milestones and manage budgets, and meaningful relationship of their artistic approach to the project's purpose. Eligibility: artist or artist team must reside in Sedgwick County, Kansas. Preference given to applicants who live, work, or have a connection to City of Wichita District III. Application deadline: 11/11/2025, 4:00 p.m. CST. Submit 5-10 images of relevant past work (video accepted), annotated image list with scale/budget/medium/year installed/location, one-page Letter of Interest, resume or CV, and three professional references.
