About This Call
Artists in Oregon, Washington, Idaho and Montana are invited to submit images of existing sculpture for a 2-year placement in downtown Hillsboro, Oregon at SW Second and Washington Streets. The selected artist will receive an honorarium of $3,000, which includes $2,000 for a 24-month display and $1,000 for transportation, base, installation, and decommissioning. The City of Hillsboro will assist with installation and removal under the artist's guidance. If the sculpture is sold during the display period, the City retains 30% of the sale price. At the close of the temporary period, the City will either end the lease and release the artwork to the artist or pursue permanent acquisition.
Artwork must be free-standing, durable, and suitable for outdoor public display. All materials must be suitable to the outdoor setting with pedestrian, skateboard and bicycle traffic, and reasonably vandal-resistant. The work should be pedestrian scale with a base for attaching to concrete not exceeding approximately 5' x 10'. Artwork must be easily maintained and meet all public safety and accessibility requirements. The work should be in keeping with the Public Art Master Plan and welcoming to Hillsboro's diverse population. Existing art that is one of a kind or of a limited series will be considered.
Eligibility is open to professional artists or artist teams living or working in Oregon, Washington, Idaho and Montana. Submissions must include up to 6 digital images of sculptures (1920 x 1920 pixels), an artist's statement not exceeding 1500 characters, and a current resume not exceeding 2 pages. Proposals to create new work will not be considered. Selection criteria include artistic excellence, suitability for the site, and durability, maintenance and safety. There is no application fee. Submission deadline is July 15, 2014 at 10:59 pm PST. Selection will occur in July 2014, with installation in summer 2014 and de-installation in August 2016.
