About This Call

High Plains Highways is a juried photography exhibition featuring images submitted by residents of the High Plains region, or images of the High Plains region taken by photographers residing outside the region. The High Plains region encompasses portions of eight states: southeastern Wyoming, southwestern South Dakota, western Nebraska, eastern Colorado, western Kansas, eastern New Mexico, western Oklahoma, and northwestern Texas. The exhibition will be on view November 11, 2016 – January 15, 2017.

High Plains Highways was conceived as a companion exhibition to The Open Road: Photography and the American Road Trip, a traveling exhibition curated by David Campany and Denise Wolff and organized by The Aperture Foundation, which will be simultaneously on view at AMoA November 4, 2016 – January 1, 2017. The Open Road features over 100 images by 19 photographers documenting travel across North America from the 1950s to today, including work by Robert Frank, Ed Ruscha, Garry Winogrand, William Eggleston, Lee Friedlander, and others. Several of these photographers traveled through the High Plains and Amarillo, Texas while traveling Route 66.

Juror Wyatt McSpadden is a native of Amarillo who began his career there in 1974 as photographer for arts patron Stanley Marsh 3. He photographed the creation of Cadillac Ranch and has since worked as an editorial photographer. His work appears in publications including Texas Monthly and resides in the permanent collections of the Museum of Fine Arts Houston, the Wittliff Collections, and the Amarillo Museum of Art.

Eligible works include any photograph taken by a resident of the High Plains region, or photograph of the High Plains region taken by a photographer residing outside the region. There is no entry fee. Applicants must be 18 years of age or older and may submit up to three images. Photographs must be ready for professional installation with maximum dimensions of 96 x 96 inches including the frame. All framed prints must use Plexiglas. The museum does not take a commission on works sold; interested buyers will be referred directly to the artist.

Artists whose work is accepted are responsible for shipping or hand-delivering artwork to and from the museum. Artworks shipped to AMoA must include a prepaid return address label. Artists are responsible for insuring their artworks in transit; works in AMoA's possession will be insured. AMoA is not responsible for damage due to improper packing.

Deadline for entries: September 9, 2016 at midnight. Artist notifications: on or before September 30, 2016. Accepted artworks due at AMoA: October 21, 2016. For questions, contact Alex Gregory at 806.371.5050 or [email protected].
