About This Call
HER FLAG seeks 36 female/self-identifying collaborators, one from each of the 36 states that ratified the 19th Amendment, to create a printed flag celebrating the anniversary of women's right to vote. Selected artists will represent their state and receive a $1,000 stipend.
Participating artists must currently live in the state they wish to represent. Each artist will create a 6-inch tall stripe (width varies by state) that is 70-80% red or pink, incorporating the state name into the artwork. All 2D media is accepted. Bold graphic work is recommended as fine details will not show well in the final 18-foot by 26-foot flag. Artists must submit high-resolution digital images of completed artwork by April 26, 2019. Selected artists must travel to their state capital on an assigned date to present their stripe during a public performance while it is sewn onto the flag. No sewing skills are required. Selected artists must be willing to be filmed for a documentary in development.
Work sample requirements: minimum 4 images, maximum 9 images total (up to 1 audio file and 1 video file optional). Application deadline is January 25, 2019 at 11:59 p.m. MST. Selected artists will be notified February 8, 2019. The flag creation tour runs from June 8, 2019 through August 18, 2020, with stripe sewing performances scheduled in each state capital. The New York Foundation for the Arts is a fiscal sponsor of Her Flag LLC.
