About This Call
The Henry Art Gallery, the art museum of the University of Washington in Seattle, is soliciting proposals for a site-specific, large-scale temporary media project for the façade of the museum's main entrance. The site consists of windows situated at one end of a busy pedestrian bridge on the University of Washington campus. Thousands of UW students, faculty, staff, and members of the general public pass by the Henry each day. The Henry seeks to engage an artist or artist team to create a media art project that will be visually striking and attention-grabbing, arousing interest and curiosity in the Henry, and motivating people to enter the museum.
Project proposals in a range of media and formats will be considered, including video art, software art, installation art with sculptural or spatial components, networked art using the Internet or social media platforms, and interactive or participatory projects. Hybrid forms of media are encouraged. The work will not be permanently incorporated into the façade of the building and should require minimal daily operation and maintenance. All electronic components and applications must be UL-approved; all electronic and structural elements must conform to Seattle fire and building codes.
To be considered, applicants must have a CV demonstrating competency in executing a project of considerable scale and complexity, with evidence of professional achievement. This is an international open call. Submissions must include an artist statement (4,000 character maximum), bio and CV, 10-15 work samples with descriptions, a proposal (4,000 characters maximum) fully describing the work's concept and technical requirements, and an implementation budget not to exceed $45,000 including a 10% contingency. The selected artist or artist team will receive an honorarium of $15,000. Three finalists will be invited for a site visit and will receive a $5,000 stipend to complete development of their design concepts. The work will be the property of the Henry Art Gallery, which will have exclusive rights to its display for three years following its debut. Intellectual rights will be assigned via contract in an equitable manner mutually agreed upon by both parties.
