About This Call
Kahilu Exhibits seeks artwork created since March 2020 that was shaped by the constraints and opportunities of the past three years. The exhibition title, "He waʻa he moku. He moku he waʻa," is a traditional ʻōlelo noʻeau (proverb) that translates as "A canoe is an island. An island is a canoe." This speaks to the need of a community to get the best out of its members, for everyone to do their part for the whole, and to use what is on hand to survive and thrive. The exhibition will bring together seemingly disparate works of art created by artists with varying ties to Hawaiʻi.
Artworks of all media created since March 2020 are encouraged, including but not limited to: painting, drawing, photography, fibers, mixed media, printmaking, sculpture, ceramics, video art, sound art, installation, new media, fashion, jewelry, and traditional crafts. Artists interested in creating site-specific installations should contact [email protected] for more information.
Entry fee is $35.00, with an additional $5.00 media fee per extra media submission. Applicants may submit 1-3 total work samples, which can include up to 3 images, 3 audio files, and/or 3 videos. Artwork must have been created since March 2020 by artists in Hawaiʻi, in exile from Hawaiʻi, or with strong ties to Hawaiʻi. Artists must be 18 or older to apply. $500 worth of prizes will be awarded. Jury dates: 10/24/22 - 10/26/22.
