About This Call

The Hawaii State Foundation on Culture and the Arts and Department of Education seek professional visual artists to create commissioned artwork for four elementary school sites in Hawaii. The program aims to commission artwork of the highest aesthetic standards for the public school system that contributes to the happiness and well-being of students, staff, and community.

Eligibility is limited to artists in the State of Hawaii. Each project is budgeted with a maximum of $75,000, paid directly to the artist in phases over an estimated two-year period. The artist will work with teachers, students, and the school community to develop a work of art that reflects and is appropriate to the school's environment, curriculum, cultural values, and aesthetics. The artist is required to provide a residency in the school equivalent to 14-16 days of instruction, conduct a minimum of one in-service training workshop for teachers, one presentation to the school and community, and one studio visit for a select number of students and teachers. Culminating works of art might include sculpture fashioned out of metal, stone, glass, concrete, or wall murals created with ceramic and/or mosaic tiles, metal, glass, or concrete.

Selection is based on artistic merit as evidenced by digital representation of past work, appropriateness of the artist's medium and style to the project goals, experience with projects of similar scale and scope including familiarity with public agencies and community groups, and experience working with students. After the application deadline, DOE/APP-AIR staff will screen applicants to establish a qualified candidate pool. Pre-qualified artists will be presented to an Art Advisory Committee composed of the school principal, one teacher, one student, one community member, and a professional visual consultant. The AAC will recommend candidates to the HSFCA Board of Commissioners. Tentative schedule: Artist interviews with schools February 1-28, 2009; Adjudication March 2009; Project implementation August 2009-June 2011.
