Harris Building Interior Art

The Linn County Public Art Commission invites artists to submit qualifications for interior artwork to be incorporated into the Dr. Percy and Lileah Harris Building in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. The Linn County Public Health Department and Linn County Child & Youth Development Services have been relocated and expanded into this new facility located at 1020 6th Street S.E. The building combines and expands these two entities, which had previously been housed separately. Public art commissioned for this facility will be funded through the County's percent for art ordinance, adopted in 2010.

The artist selected for this project will create a significant civic artwork for the indoor entry space. The work can be either two-dimensional or relief work and must be attached to a wall approximately 13' 9" high by 15' 9" wide located in the main lobby. It will be viewable primarily from inside the lobby, with adjacent glass panels allowing exterior viewing as well. The budget for this project will not exceed $50,000, including design, fabrication, transportation, and installation. Up to three finalists will be selected to develop concept proposals and will each be paid a $250 proposal fee.

This Request for Qualifications is open to all professional artists and artist teams. Only the first 250 applications received will be accepted. Artists must submit a typed letter of interest (no more than three pages), current artistic resume (no longer than three pages), and at least five but no more than ten digital images of previous artwork through the CaFÉ online system. The deadline for submittal of materials is March 9, 2020. A selection panel will review qualifications and select finalists based on artistic excellence, understanding of the project, and availability to meet the project timeline. The anticipated installation date is November 13, 2020.
