About This Call
The Harmony Jewelry Design Competition challenges participants to design a piece of jewelry for production using specific pricing and production criteria. The winning piece will be manufactured and sold to raise charitable donations for the Nature Conservancy.
Design Requirements: The design must represent an environmental concept (recycling, conservation, renewable energy, or environmental clean-up). Participants must design jewelry using production manufacturing techniques and be able to produce the item at wholesale for no more than $25 including materials and labor. All finalist jewelry items must be made from HARMONY Recycled Silver. Eligible jewelry items are limited to bracelets, fobs, charms, pendants, or pins. Ideally, designs should be compatible with future competition winners so all winning items could be worn together.
Two competition levels are offered: Student Designer (open to jewelry students in North American jewelry and metals programs) with no entry fee and scholarship prizes of $1,000 (1st place), $500 (2nd place), and $250 (3rd place); and Professional Designer (open to SNAG members, independent artisans, and designer-manufacturers) with entry fees of $35 for SNAG members and $50 for non-members, with winners receiving trophies and trade press publicity. Submissions must be made online by January 15, 2011 at 11:59 p.m. MST. Designs can be submitted as hand-drawn images, CAD illustrations, or photographs of actual jewelry (finished jewelry will not be accepted for preliminary judging). Participants may submit up to 2 images per entry. A 100-word maximum statement describing how the design would be mass-manufactured within competition restrictions is required, including dimensions, weight, and finishing details. No more than 3 entries per person are accepted. Finalists will be notified in January and asked to produce finished jewelry for final judging on April 1, 2011. Winners will be announced on Earth Day, April 22, 2011. Winning and finalist pieces will be returned to designers by July 1, 2011. Hoover & Strong will produce the winning piece and sell it through nationwide retail participation for approximately $50, with all proceeds donated to the Nature Conservancy.
