About This Call

The City of Happy Valley seeks to acquire a permanent, larger-scale sculpture depicting the theme of "A Soldier's Journey" for Veterans Memorial Park, located at Happy Valley City Hall (16000 SE Misty Drive, Happy Valley, OR 97086). Selected artwork will be displayed in a greenspace east of the existing stone labyrinth and will be highly visible from within the labyrinth, City Hall, 162nd Ave, and a commercial center across the street. Artwork placement will facilitate meaningful spaces to experience grief, healing, remembrance, and celebration.

Artwork should creatively interpret "A Soldier's Journey" while considering an element representing the community's role in supporting soldiers and veterans. The selection panel is particularly interested in submissions that are simple, symbolic, and solemn; invite viewers to symbolically walk through or experience what veterans have experienced; honor veterans while inspiring future generations; and contain interactive elements such as artwork that can be touched or engages its environment. Artwork must be fabricated in durable, permanent, outdoor media requiring minimal maintenance and able to withstand weather, vandalism, and pedestrian contact. Selected artwork must be fitted with a ¼-inch (minimum) steel plate base prior to delivery for welding to a City-provided display pad. The City will design and construct the display pad and provide professional installation.

Artists may submit up to three concepts. Submissions must include artist contact information, artwork dimensions, base dimensions, total weight, materials, a description of how each artwork interprets the theme, and an image of each sculpture. Optional materials include a resume/CV detailing outdoor sculpture experience with two references, a one-page letter of interest, and demographic information. The maximum total budget for sculpture acquisition is $50,000, including design, construction, engineering drawings, delivery, and travel. The selected artist will receive half the sculpture acquisition price upon contract execution and the outstanding balance upon artwork delivery. The City will additionally pay up to $6,300 for the display pad, installation, and interpretive signage. Artists will be notified of selection status the week of January 16, 2023. This opportunity is open to all artists residing in the United States or U.S. Territories.
