About This Call
The Arts and Science Council in Charlotte, North Carolina, on behalf of Mecklenburg County, invites artists and teams living anywhere in the United States to submit qualifications for public art opportunities at the new Hall Marshall facility at Freedom Center, located at the intersection of Freedom Drive and Ashley Road in Charlotte. The total art budget is $650,000, which will be divided between up to three projects.
Various site opportunities exist for both interior and exterior spaces, including an exterior gateway or 'beacon' sculpture at the entryway drive from Ashley Road; an interior centerpiece sculpture or architectural enhancement in the Customer Service area; sculpture or architectural enhancement at or near the LUESA (Land Use and Environmental Services Administration) entrance; and various other possibilities including addressing glass, walls, or three-dimensional space on the interior. Options are open to discussion by the design team depending upon artists' ability to create innovative, original works on a significant scale.
Submission materials must include: a letter of interest (250-300 words) supporting the artist's qualifications; a professional resume not exceeding 3 pages; ten images of past work showcasing public art experience; an annotated image list including title, dimensions, media/materials, project budget, location, date of completion, and descriptive notes; and three professional references with contact information only. This is a Request for Qualifications only; specific proposals are not requested at this time. No original artwork, photographic prints, maquettes, or other materials will be accepted for review. Applications containing primarily gallery scale work or digitally produced proposals will not be reviewed. Semi-finalists will be contacted in December 2008 for interviews held in January 2009. The Public Art Commission's goal is to place three artists under contract by March 2009. Artists who have received a commission or purchase from either City of Charlotte or Mecklenburg County for over $25,000 cannot be considered for another commission or purchase for three years after the date of a signed contract or letter of agreement. ASC staff, County or City staff, Public Art Commission members, or their immediate families are not eligible for this program.
