About This Call

H2O: Shifting Currents invites artists to submit work exploring water and its representations. Water is essential to life, without fixed form, reflective, a conductor and wet. It can represent cleansing, purity, power, wisdom, an open heart and mind, and change. After three years of constant change and uncertainty involving much pain and loss, this call asks artists to consider water and what it can represent.

All entries must be handmade prints using traditional printmaking and/or photographic processes created in the last 5 years. 3D and experimental work is encouraged. Accepted processes include silkscreen, letterpress, calligraphy, etching, woodcut, lithography, linocut, drypoint, mezzotint, monoprint, polymer plates, silver gelatin prints, photopolymer gravure, copperplate gravure, cyanotype, vandyke, gumbichromate, palladium, platinum, carbon, salt, wet plate, chemigram, lumen, argrotype, oilprint, chlorophyll, instant transfers, and lifts. Digital photographic images can be used in combination with other processes, but straight digital prints and AI-generated images will not be accepted. Work needs to arrive at the gallery ready to hang but framing is not required; magnets, clips, and other methods can be used. Artists may submit 5-10 images. Entry fee is $35 for 5 images, $5 for each additional image. Sliding scale discounts are available with coupon codes disc15 ($15 for 5 images) or disc25 ($25 for 5 images).

Juror Kristen Martincic will select First Place ($300), Second Place ($200), and Third Place ($100) awards. Notification of acceptance will be sent September 8th. Work is due at Light Art Space by September 23rd. The exhibition runs October 5 – November 4, 2023, with a reception and juror talk on Friday, October 6th, 5-7 pm. Sales are encouraged; Light Art Space retains a 50% commission on sold artwork. Light Art Space invites submissions from all artists, including Black, Latina, Indigenous people, and all self-identifying people of color.
