About This Call
The Greenville-Spartanburg Airport District is requesting expressions of interest from professional artists to compete for a commission of an art installation at Greenville-Spartanburg International Airport (GSP). The District is undertaking a major addition, renovation and modernization project at GSP, and the inclusion of new artwork is an important part of this project. Three major themes have been chosen and twelve potential sites have been identified for artwork placement.
Art installations can serve broader functions beyond aesthetics. Strategically located along passenger traffic flow, art can function as a wayfinding device and create easily-remembered meeting places. Art can also contribute to the airport's sense of place by creating a meaningful and authentic connection to residents and visitors, making it feel like home and integral to local culture and community. The District requires commissioned artwork to reinforce themes relevant to the region and community through coordination with building colors, materials, and architectural expression.
Three themes have been identified: Where we live—integration of water and landscape (the region's unique commitment to landscape and water); Where we've come from—textile capital of the world (the region's historical global recognition as a center of textile manufacturing); and Where we're going—technology and mobility (the region's future as a North American center of technological innovation with reference to the automobile industry). Artists submitting concepts must demonstrate how their proposed work supports one or more of these themes. Submissions may include 1-6 images and 0-6 videos. Up to 4 applications are allowed per artist.
