About This Call
The City and County of Denver is seeking artists for a public art commission at the new Green Valley Ranch Library, a 26,000 square foot facility located 8 miles south of Denver International Airport. The library is designed as a Family and Children's Style facility incorporating the latest library technology, modular flexible spaces, and a large landscaped outdoor community space with views of the plains and Rocky Mountains.
Public art opportunities exist in three main areas: glass work that could be incorporated into stepped niches along the north side of the building; interior artwork for way-finding, reading and study niches, discovery pods, furniture design, a fireplace/hearth area, entry vestibule flooring, and accent pieces; and exterior work including seating, covered walkways, interactive earthworks, and sculptural works in the outdoor meeting space. Artwork should be appropriate for a diverse community of all ages and be durable and easily maintained.
Up to five artists or artist teams will be selected as semi-finalists and asked to prepare proposals. Semi-finalists will receive an honorarium of $750-1,250 to prepare and present proposals in person; all proposal expenses including travel and per diem must be paid from the honorarium. The final artist(s) selected will receive a commission budget of approximately $140,000, inclusive of design fees, consultation fees, insurance, materials, fabrication, transportation, installation, travel, per diem, and project documentation. The selected artist(s) must enter into a contract with the City and County of Denver and obtain required insurance. Construction is scheduled to begin in the first quarter of 2010 with building opening in the first quarter of 2011.
Applications must be submitted online via CaFÉ with eight digital images of previously completed artworks, a statement of interest (500 words/2,000 characters maximum), and a one- to two-page résumé. Artists submitting kinetic, sound, or media works must also submit a DVD of no more than five minutes to the Denver Office of Cultural Affairs. There is no application fee.
