About This Call

The Greater Hartford Arts Council is seeking qualifications from artists and artist teams for new mural projects in downtown Hartford, CT. The purpose of these projects is a series of murals based on the theme of "representation," rooted in joy, wonder, hope and inspiration. The selected artists will create dynamic and impactful murals that celebrate the community and diversity of the Greater Hartford Region. These mural projects are part of Hartford Creates, a collaboration between the Arts Council and the City of Hartford to elevate the creative economy, increase engagement and diversity within the arts community and create access and awareness of the arts through strategic activation.

Four project opportunities are available: "Instagrammable Hartford" (various locations, smaller projects, budgets less than $5,000, open to emerging muralists); "The Stilts Building" (wall across from Capital Community College, up to $15,000, mural experience required); "MAT Garage" (wall across from Hilton Hotel, up to $7,500, mural experience required); and "Big Red Wall" (wall at the corner of Ann Uccello and Church Streets, up to $65,000, mural experience required). Experience level varies by project. For "Instagrammable Hartford," formal proposals are not required. For the other three projects, a formal proposal process is required.

Applications must include a resume or CV, a statement of interest and qualifications addressing why you are interested in the project, your artistic accomplishments, and your connection to the Greater Hartford community, and a portfolio of up to 5 images representing relevant work, particularly in public art. Include a brief narrative or pencil sketch of your concept. Submit 3-15 images total. Priority for residency is given to artists based in the City of Hartford, with second priority to artists in the Greater Hartford region. Applications from artists beyond the region are accepted. Deadline: July 7, 2023 at 11:59 p.m. MDT. Selection and notification occur mid-July 2023, with projects beginning in August 2023 and completion by late September 2023.
