About This Call
Artists have played an important role in the formation, preservation, and enjoyment of national parks. Artist interpretation of park landscapes through many types of media connects people to these special places, which is an essential part of the preservation and protection of America's national parks.
At Great Basin National Park, artists will be surrounded by natural beauty from the 13,063-foot summit of Wheeler Peak to the depths of Lehman Caves. The park offers solitude, wilderness, and renowned dark-sky stargazing. Three residencies will occur in 2024: a summer camping residency (2-3 weeks in July-August), a fall lodging residency (2-3 weeks in September-October), and a winter lodging residency (2-3 weeks in January-February). Summer camping includes provided gear (tent, stove, cots, camp kitchen). Fall and winter lodging include a furnished private bedroom in shared living space with kitchen and bathroom, washers, dryers, and major appliances. Internet and public WiFi are unavailable at all residencies; cell service is limited. Pets and smoking are not allowed. Selected artists will be awarded housing but no other stipend; artists must pay for travel, food, and other expenditures.
One regional Artist-in-Residence (AIR) will be selected from artists living and working in Nevada or Utah. Each AIR must present one public program in the park during residency and one virtual public program after. Each AIR will provide a digital portfolio of work created during residency and donate one physical artistic piece (if applicable) with digital representation within one year. Artists will be selected based on demonstrated professionalism, artistic integrity, creativity, ability to interpret Great Basin National Park and the Great Basin Region, and ability to reside in a remote location. Application requirements include a professional resume, personal statement addressing public program concept and ability to reside remotely, and work samples (up to 6 images for visual artists, up to 6 short works or 1 long work for writers, up to 6 short selections or 1 long selection for musicians/performers). The park is very remote; the closest town is Baker with few amenities; Ely, Nevada is 60 miles away.
