About This Call
Philadelphia Youth Basketball (PYB) is seeking talented graphic artists to create a signature mural at the Alan Horowitz "Sixth Man" Center, made possible by the Connelly Foundation. This mural will celebrate Philadelphia's historical richness, civic identity, and cultural pride while inspiring the thousands of young people and families who utilize the space each year. PYB particularly welcomes submissions from local, BIPOC, and artists experienced in community-engaged practices.
The mural project, titled "The Philadelphia Timeline Wall," consists of two primary layers. The top layer features a continuous contour line drawing of the Philadelphia skyline, including iconic structures such as City Hall and the Comcast Technology Center, symbolizing the city's architectural milestones and transformation over time. The bottom layer presents a visual timeline expanding on one of several proposed themes: the History of Philadelphia's Neighborhoods or Famous Accomplishments Born in Philadelphia. Artists will utilize graphic design, archival photography, and digital illustration to capture key events, individuals, and movements integral to Philadelphia's history.
The total budget for the artist portion is $12,000, covering artist fees for design, consultation, revisions, and collaboration; archival photo rights and licensing; digitization and printing of decals; materials and installation; youth and community engagement sessions (approximately 4-6 hours); and unveiling event time (approximately 2 hours). Submissions must include a portfolio of relevant past work, an artist statement about your artistic vision and approach to community engagement, theme selection with vision for depiction, an engagement strategy describing youth and community involvement, a budget breakdown, and an estimated timeline for design and installation phases. Selection will be based on artistic quality, experience with community engagement and participatory practices, feasibility of proposed timelines and budget, commitment to representation and inclusivity, and relationship to Philadelphia. Entry fee is $10.00. Submit 5-20 images of relevant work.
