About This Call
This program is designed to host professional artists working at a high level in their field. The program follows an artist-focused and open-ended model that prioritizes on-site research and exploration to inform public interactions and understanding. While some visitor contact and outreach will be required, the majority of artists' time on-site will be spent as they best see fit. The work that comes from this freedom may advance fundamental connections with Grand Canyon through future on- and off-site exhibits, publications, and presentations.
Applicants must have a clear idea of direction, topic, and the project they will work on during their residency. Projects may evolve and change during the residency as long as the new direction has relevance to the canyon or its communities and meets all program requirements and NPS guidelines. Artists from a wide variety of disciplines are welcome, including visual art, installation or land-based art, printmaking, audio, film, writing, indigenous arts, new media, performance art, social practice, and interdisciplinary arts. Selections will be made without regard to race, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, marital status, age, or national origin. Every reasonable effort will be made to accommodate artists with disabilities or accessibility needs.
Artists are required to provide publication-quality digital representation of work done during the residency and later work created as a direct result of the residency. Each artist is asked to contribute a one-page two-dimensional expression of their on-site experience. Selection criteria include artistic merit and track record, how the work plan is inspired by and will contribute to broadening understanding of Grand Canyon and its surrounding communities, and how the work plan and public programs foster innovation, diversity, and relevance to National Park visitors. Entry fee is $45.00. Work samples may include up to 10 images, 2 audio files, and 5 video files (maximum 17 total samples). All files must be labeled with artist name, work title, and year created, and applicants must supply a worklist in PDF form with title, year, medium, and size/length for each sample.
