About This Call

The Grand Canyon Artist in Residence program invites professional artists working at a high level in their field to apply for residencies in 2022. Three residency periods are available, beginning in February, May, and September. Each residency lasts a minimum of six weeks and a maximum of eight weeks. Residents will be housed in an apartment at historic Verkamp's Visitor Center.

The base stipend is $2,000 for six weeks, with an additional $250 per week for weeks seven and eight. The program follows an artist-focused and open-ended model that prioritizes on-site research and exploration. While some visitor contact and outreach will be required, the majority of artists' time will be spent as they best see fit. Artists must have a clear idea of their project direction and topic when applying, though projects may evolve during the residency as long as they maintain relevance to the canyon or its communities and meet NPS guidelines.

The program welcomes applicants from a wide variety of artistic disciplines, including visual art, installation or land-based art, printmaking, audio, film, writing, indigenous arts, new media, performance art, social practice, and interdisciplinary arts. Artists will be selected based on artistic merit, track record of accomplishments, quality of work samples, how the work plan contributes to understanding Grand Canyon and its communities, and how the work fosters innovation and relevance to National Park visitors. Each artist is required to provide publication-quality digital representation of work completed during and after the residency, and is asked to contribute a one-page two-dimensional expression of their on-site experience. An application fee of $45 is required; economic hardship waivers are available upon request. The application deadline is September 15, 2021 at 11:59 p.m. MDT.
