About This Call
Glow in the Garden is a free, curated outdoor public light-art experience set against the historic backdrop of Wailuku Town, ʻĪao Valley, and Mauna Kahālāwai. Artists of all ages are invited to submit pre-fabricated work for consideration in this one-night-only event taking place on Saturday, May 27, 2023 from sunset through 9 PM at the IMUA Discovery Garden's 2023 Butterfly Festival.
Artwork must integrate a lighting component as a primary design element and play with the perception of light. Artists are encouraged to incorporate wireless lighting (solar, battery-powered, glow-in-the-dark, etc.) or be prepared to provide a generator to power the required lighting component. Selected works will be exhibited throughout the 6-acre property, transforming the Garden with light and color. Artwork must be the artist's own original work, suitable for viewers of all ages, soundly constructed, firmly anchored with wind load capacity, and completely weatherproof.
Entry fee is $10 per artwork submission (to be applied to artist awards). Applicants must submit up to ten digital images showing all angles of the work, the base, the light component, and how the work will be secured. Work should have been created within the last five to ten years and not previously shown in the Wailuku area. Three cash awards will be given: 1st place ($2,500), 2nd place ($1,000), and 3rd place ($500), announced at the event with distribution within 30 days. Artwork does not need to be for sale; artists receive 100% of any sales. The exhibition will be displayed online at smalltownbig.org/GLOW. Selection criteria include artistic impression, quality, durability, aesthetic appeal, appropriateness to the garden and community, and public safety considerations.
