About This Call
The Denver Office of Cultural Affairs seeks to commission a Colorado artist or team of artists for a site-specific public art commission at Globeville Pool, located in Argo Park at 47th Avenue and Logan Street, between Interstate 25 and the South Platte River, just north of Interstate 70.
Argo Park, originally opened in 1880 and acquired by the City of Denver in 1906, now covers 7.9 acres and includes a swimming pool, restroom/locker room facility, tennis court, softball field, junior football field, playground facilities and picnic tables. A 1948 memorial commemorates residents who sacrificed their lives in World War I and World War II. The park is undergoing major redevelopment with improvements slated for completion in June 2007, including removal of the tennis court, installation of an interactive water-spray fountain for kids, and creation of a new landscaped entrance with a diagonal walkway.
The Project Evaluation Panel has identified public art opportunities as either a 3-dimensional artwork near the new entrance or an outdoor mural on the electrical and/or locker buildings near the pool. Each option could include community involvement. Artwork must be highly durable to withstand Denver's weather. Finalists will have the opportunity to spend time in the park with members of the design team to identify further locations and possibilities.
Applicants may apply as a single artist or multi-person collaboration. The selection process uses blind slide review. Applicants must submit eight digital images of previously completed artwork, a resume (maximum two pages), and a letter of interest (maximum 250 words). Three semi-finalists will be selected and each will receive an honorarium of $200.00 to prepare and present a final proposal in person. The total contract awarded to the selected artist or team is between $9,000.00-$10,000.00, inclusive of all costs including design fee, consultation fees, structural engineering, insurance, materials, fabrication, transportation, installation, travel, per diem, project documentation, and contingency.
Deadline for entry is Friday, April 6, 2007. Semi-finalist selection is April 20, 2007; finalist selection is June 1, 2007; finalist notification is June 15, 2007. Denver's Public Art Program is open to all artists regardless of race, color, religion, national origin, gender, age, military status, sexual orientation, marital status, physical or mental disability or residency. Artists working in any media are eligible; previous public art experience is not required. For kinetic, sound or media works, submit a complete application including eight still images and written materials, plus a DVD or VHS tape of no more than five minutes to: Denver Office of Cultural Affairs, Wellington E. Webb Municipal Building, Public Art Program – Globeville Pool, 201 W. Colfax Ave., Dept. 1007, Denver, CO 80202.
