About This Call
Salt Lake City Parks and Public Lands, in collaboration with the Arts Council, invites artists and artist-led teams to submit qualifications for the Glendale Park public art project. Glendale Park is a 7.2 acre park located at 1375 West 1700 South, just west of the Seven Peaks Water Park in the West Salt Lake Planning Area. The park serves residents from the Glendale, Poplar Grove, and Rose Park neighborhoods and is accessible from the regional trail on the Jordan River. In fall 2018, Salt Lake City Council approved funding for final phase park improvements including a small multi-use field, looped walking path, pavilion, and playground, to be completed by summer 2020. The selected artist or artist-led team will collaborate with the contracted landscape architecture consultant to integrate artwork and concepts into the overall renovations.
This RFQ is open to all professional artists and artist-led teams residing in the United States. Utah artists are strongly encouraged to apply, as are artists with expertise in community engagement. The total project budget is $188,500, inclusive of artist fees and related expenses for design, supplies, fabrication, insurance, transportation, travel, permits, and installation. The artist should include a contingency plan of at least 10% of the commission in the budget. Sought artwork should be visually engaging and encourage interactivity or surprise; may serve multiple purposes; reflect the Glendale community and surrounding neighborhoods; exemplify strong, imaginative design; incorporate sustainable concepts and materials; not require electricity, audio/visual technology, water, or ongoing resources; and meet all public safety, structural, maintenance standards, ADA compliance, and applicable laws and codes.
Submission deadline is Thursday, May 9, 2019 by 11:59 p.m. MDT via the CaFÉ online application system. There is no application fee. Required materials include a letter of interest (not to exceed one page/500 words), resume or CV (not to exceed two pages/1,000 words), professional references (two prior permanent public art project administrators), and 5-10 jpeg images of installed past work of similar scope, scale, and budget. Artists submitting kinetic, sound, or media works must include links to work uploaded online. The Salt Lake Art Design Board will recommend one artist or artist-led team and one alternate to the Mayor for final approval. The selected artist/team must carry general liability and auto insurance and provide proof of Workers' Compensation Coverage or apply for a waiver. Engineering drawings must be submitted for approval prior to fabrication. Installation of artwork is scheduled for completion by June 2020.
