GLEAN Call to Artists

GLEAN is a juried residency program that gives selected artists from the Portland area access to the Metro Central transfer station to glean materials for creating art. The program seeks to inspire people to think about consumption habits, waste generation, and resources by tapping into the creativity of artists. GLEAN is a partnership between Recology, Metro, and crackedpots, an environmental arts non-profit.

Artists working in a variety of media are encouraged to apply, except for photography or AV projects. Selected artists will have access to glean materials from the transfer station for 6 months and must create a minimum of 8 pieces available for sale at the exhibition. Ninety-five percent of each piece must be created from materials gleaned from the transfer station. Each artist will receive a $2,000 stipend upon successful completion of the program and 80% commission from sales of their art at the 2016 exhibition. Recology and Metro will each retain one piece from each artist for public exhibition.

Applicants must be residents of Multnomah, Washington, or Clackamas counties. Artists are required to sign an Artist Agreement and attend Safety Training before gleaning, and must be available for monthly weekday meetings. The exhibition opens September 9, 2016 and runs through October 2, 2016.
