About This Call
GLEAN is a juried residency program that gives five selected artists from the Portland area (Multnomah, Washington, and Clackamas counties) access to the Metro Central transfer station to glean materials for creating art. The program aims to tap into the creativity of artists to inspire people to think about their consumption habits, the waste they generate, and the resources they throw away. One residency position is reserved for a student currently enrolled in an art program at a local college or university, with student applications considered separately from other artist applications. GLEAN seeks artists with a broad range of experiences and cultural perspectives from diverse communities in the Portland area and encourages applications from artists working in a variety of media. Photography and AV projects are not being accepted at this time.
Selected artists will have the opportunity to glean materials from Metro Central transfer station for the five-month program duration and will be required to create a minimum of eight pieces available for sale at the exhibition, with ninety-five percent of each piece created from gleaned materials. Each artist will receive a $2,000 stipend upon successful completion of the program and 80% commission from the sale of their art at the exhibition. Applicants must be residents of Multnomah, Washington, or Clackamas county. Recology will retain one piece from each artist for its permanent collection; Metro will retain one piece from each artist to be publicly displayed for two years. Artists are required to sign an artist agreement and attend safety training before gleaning, and must be available for monthly weekday meetings.
Application deadline is January 31, 2018. Jury Committee will select eight artists to be interviewed on February 9, with the interview panel selecting finalists on February 16. Safety training and orientation will occur on February 23. Work samples should include 4-6 images. GLEAN is a partnership between Recology, Metro, and crackedpots, an environmental arts non-profit. Materials are available upon request in other languages.
