About This Call
GLEAN is a juried residency program that gives selected artists from the Portland area (Multnomah, Washington, and Clackamas counties) access to the Metro Central transfer station to glean materials for creating art. The program aims to inspire people to think about their consumption habits, waste generation, and resource use.
Selected artists will have access to glean materials for 5 months and must create a minimum of 8 pieces available for sale at the exhibition, with 95% of each piece created from gleaned materials. Each artist receives a $2,000 stipend upon successful program completion and 80% commission from art sales at the exhibition. Recology will retain one piece from each artist for their permanent collection; Metro will retain one piece for a 2-year period of public exhibition. One residency position is dedicated to a student currently enrolled in an art program at a local college or university, with student applications considered separately.
Applicants must be residents of Multnomah, Washington, or Clackamas county. GLEAN seeks artists with diverse experiences and cultural perspectives working in a variety of media, but is not currently seeking photography or audiovisual projects. Artists must sign an Artist Agreement, attend Safety Training before gleaning, and be available for monthly weekday meetings. The exhibition opens August 4, 2017, with exhibition dates running August 4-26. GLEAN is a partnership between Recology, Metro, and crackedpots, an environmental arts non-profit.
