About This Call
The City of Grand Junction and the Grand Junction Commission on Arts and Culture are seeking an artist to create an original mural for the Mezzanine Fitness area at the new Community Recreation Center located at Matchett Park, 2836 Recreation Way. The mural design should complement the view of the Grand Mesa and Bookcliffs and feature landscape and wildlife of the Grand Junction area, utilizing the specified color palette and design threads.
The mural design must be original and socially acceptable, adhering to the highest standards of quality, timelessness, permanence, and general appeal. The artwork should provide excitement and interest for visitors and residents, utilize long-lasting materials resistant to vandalism, and include a cleanable and protective coating. Specific wall dimensions are provided in the site details. The project is open to all artists residing in Colorado, age 21 and over. Artists must demonstrate images of original creations similar in size and theme to this project. Selection will be based on past artwork experience, style, concept, ability to comply with the timeline, and references.
The budget for this project cannot exceed $12,000. If selected, the artist is responsible for all costs involved in design and creation, including paint, supplies, scaffolding, ladders, tools, and protective coverings. The submission deadline is February 22, 2026 at 11:59 p.m. MST. Applications must include a letter of interest (one page maximum), resume (two pages maximum), one-page design description, concept sketch(es), and up to five images of original representative work in .JPG or .JPEG format (1024 x 768 pixels maximum, 1mb maximum per file). The artist selection panel will review applications between February 23 and March 25, 2026, with artists notified on March 27, 2026. Painting is scheduled for July 2026 with an August 1, 2026 hard deadline. The installation timeline is tentative and adjustable based on construction and artist availability.
