About This Call
The Georgia Institute of Technology is seeking qualifications from artists or artist teams for the commission of between three and six site-specific outdoor sculptures to be situated in the landscape area/hardscape in front of the Engineered Biosystems Building (EBB) in Atlanta, Georgia. The Arts Acquisitions Committee is particularly interested in sculptural artwork that lives at the intersection of art, science and technology.
The total budget is $325,000 towards the commission and acquisition of between three and six site-specific outdoor sculptures. All costs associated with each sculpture should be inclusive of artist design fee, structural engineering, insurance, materials, fabrication, transportation, installation, travel to and from the site, per diem expenses, project documentation, contingency to cover unexpected expenses and any other costs related to each sculpture. Up to eight semifinalists will be selected to develop design proposals. Each semifinalist artist/team will be paid an honorarium of $1,000 for artists within Georgia and $1,500 for artists outside of Georgia. An Art Acquisitions Committee will select between three and six projects from the semifinalist design proposals for final commission and acquisition.
The EBB houses labs for research in chemical biology, cell and developmental biology, and systems biology. Project goals include serving as a visual connection between the site and building, considering the audience of scientists, technologists, engineers and students, fitting well within the site context in terms of scale and design, considering existing architecture and natural features, and accounting for view corridors during day and night hours. Materials and finishes shall be of the highest quality and designed for durability and relatively low maintenance. Work sample requirements: minimum 5 images, maximum 10 images; minimum 0 videos, maximum 5 videos; total samples minimum 5, maximum 10.
