About This Call

The Greater Augusta Arts Council, on behalf of Augusta University, is requesting proposals from qualified sculptors or artist teams to create a unique, durable, low-maintenance, safe-to-touch sculpture for the Georgia Cyber Innovation and Training Center. The sculpture will be placed on the grounds in a space easily viewable by the public, along the elevated Augusta Riverwalk with clear line of sight from 12th Street below.

Artists are asked to conceive sculptures symbolizing innovation, technological advancement, and the spirit of progress, particularly through collaboration and community. The work should capture the dynamic, ever-evolving nature of innovation and highlight processes or technological advancements that pave the way for the future. The sculpture must be structurally sound, durable, require little to no maintenance beyond routine cleaning, and be capable of withstanding adverse weather conditions common to the Augusta region. The work must be suitable for pedestrian interaction with low exposure to injury, with no sharp parts or climbing invitations. Dimensional requirements: 10-15 feet high including base. The sculpture is intended to last for 50 years minimum in good condition.

Eligibility is open to professional sculptors and artist teams with all members at least 18 years old and residing in the Southeastern United States. Georgia Cyber Innovation and Training Center employees are not eligible. Artists may apply up to 5 times with separate proposals; each application must be for one individual design. Work sample requirements: 5-10 images. The selected artist will receive a $15,000 stipend to cover all expenses associated with envisioning, creation, transport, insurance, installation, and any other project-related costs, including a concrete pad if needed. Installation is scheduled for June 2024. For in-depth questions, contact Scott Thorp, Chair of the Department of Art and Design at Augusta University, at [email protected]. The site coordinates are 33.480771, -81.971259.
