About This Call

The City of Lewisville, Texas is seeking qualifications from artists to create a large-scale 3D work of art integrated into an expansion of the Gene Carey Animal Shelter and Adoption Center. The expansion, funded by the 2024 Bond Election, will include additional kennel space, upgraded surgical suite, expanded storage and staff space, dedicated volunteer space, and integrated public art. Construction is expected to start by late 2025.

The City seeks an artist or artist team to create a unique large-scale 3D work that can be architecturally integrated into publicly accessible areas, including the outside elevation of the facility. The art should relate to animals serviced at the facility and reflect the playful nature and positive emotional connections between pets and humans. Artists with experience creating immersive and interactive concepts are encouraged to apply. This project is open to United States-based artists only.

The budget for this commission is up to $175,000 USD, inclusive of all costs including design fee, materials, consultation fees, insurance, fabrication, transportation, installation, and travel. The artwork must be fabricated of highly durable, low-maintenance materials suitable for outdoor exposure in Texas climate. Traditional powder-coating finishes are not allowed. Interactive elements must meet ADA requirements. The selected artist will be required to consult with a professional conservator prior to final proposal submission. The artist is expected to travel to Lewisville two to three times for site visits, community presentation, installation, and ideally a dedication event. Virtual meetings and regular updates to city staff will be required throughout the fabrication process. Entry deadline: May 16, 2025 at 11:59 p.m. MDT.
