About This Call

Gateway Rising is a 140-unit affordable housing community under construction in Menlo Park's Belle Haven neighborhood, with completion expected in summer 2023. The project includes rental apartments for families, a community room with kitchen, after-school program classroom, teen center, computer lab, fitness center, and outdoor recreation areas. Seven units are set-aside for households experiencing homelessness. This represents the final phase of the original Gateway Apartments' redevelopment, which was originally built in the 1960s and acquired by MidPen Housing in 1987.

MidPen Housing is seeking an artist to create two murals at Gateway Rising: one on an exterior wall (33.3' x 11.5') highly visible to pedestrian traffic along Willow Road, and one on an interior wall (19.3' x 10.9') on the first-floor lobby adjacent to residents' mailboxes. The exterior mural will be hand-painted on fiber cement panel and must be durable and vandal resistant. The interior mural will be on gypsum board (drywall). The approved budget for this project is $31,000, required to cover all art and project-related expenses including artwork design, fabrication, materials, installation, travel, and insurance. MidPen Housing will cover the rental cost of the articulating boom lift.

Artists must submit a portfolio of up to ten images of past artworks similar in scope to the proposed project, an artist bio addressing their history and experience, and a statement of interest describing their interest in the project and themes. Local artists (Belle Haven neighborhood, Menlo Park, San Mateo County, or Bay Area) will be given preference. The selection panel will choose up to three artists to interview before making a final decision. Application deadline: October 23, 2022. Contact: Jasmine Soria-Delgado at (650) 773-9195.
