About This Call

Cascadia Behavioral Healthcare invites visual artists living in Oregon to submit qualifications for two site-specific murals/wall works for the Garlington Health and Wellness Center in NE Portland. The new clinic is planned to open spring 2018 at 3034 NE Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd. One mural will be exterior (south-facing wall, 40' 8" wide by 11' 8" high) and one will be interior but visible from the street (north interior wall of building entrance, 13' 2" wide by 12' high, visible through floor-to-ceiling windows). Additional artwork may be purchased for an interior space in the adjacent apartment building.

Artists must create distinctive, original artwork reflective of the rich multicultural history of the Eliot neighborhood that is visually vibrant, colorful and bold. Designs must use durable materials such as porcelain enamel, water jet aluminum, or steel; painted murals will not be considered. If artists lack experience with these materials, Cascadia will work with selected artists to identify fabricators and installers. The overall project budget is approximately $60,000 for design, fabrication and installation. Applicants must be currently living in Oregon; Cascadia encourages artists with past or present connections to Portland's MLK/Eliot/Alberta communities.

Submissions must include a statement of interest explaining why the project appeals to you and your connection to the MLK/Alberta community, a résumé or bio, a list of minimum three professional references, and 6-10 images of past work with titles, years, dimensions, budgets and brief descriptions. The selection panel will review submissions and choose finalists for interviews. Final selection will be based on artistic excellence, project interest as expressed in artist statements and interviews, and relevance of concepts to project goals. The selected artist will receive a design contract with a design fee paid from the art budget. Installation is scheduled for January/February 2018.
