About This Call
The Western European Architecture Foundation announces the thirtieth annual Gabriel Prize competition, named in honor of French architect Jacques Gabriel (1698-1782). The prize is conferred annually to a jury-selected applicant to provoke personal, critical responses to architectural compositions in France built between 1630 and 1930. Interpretative studies are to be graphically recorded in freehand sketches and presented in perspective drawings reflecting the skill of the winner. Work is to be executed in France with the advice and under the supervision of the European Representative of the Foundation.
Eligibility is limited to United States citizens. Applicants must submit online by January 17, 2020, including a resume, a description of intended study (maximum 2 pages), a tentative outline of architectural compositions (maximum 1 page), three letters of recommendation, and up to 20 examples of original work in .jpg format. A jury appointed by the Foundation will select three candidates for interviews in the second phase. Travel expenses from within the United States will be reimbursed by the Foundation.
The winner receives a $20,000 stipend to cover all costs of travel and study for three months, roughly between May 1 and August 1. The stipend is awarded as follows: $10,000 on March 6, 2020; $7,500 following completion of the first perspective color drawing; and $2,500 upon delivery of the three drawings and scans. The winner must provide three perspective color drawings (20" x 30") and a sketch notebook (approximately 8" x 10"). The three drawings become the property of the Foundation with all copyrights attached. A valid passport is required, and a French visa may be required for the period of study.
