About This Call

Surface Design Association (SDA) in partnership with Textile Arts | Los Angeles invites students to submit work for the annual SDA Juried Student Exhibition, Future Tense 2022. This virtual exhibition opens June 2022 and celebrates the creative work of student artists, designers, and makers working with or inspired by fiber and textile materials or techniques. All SDA student members and non-member students working in all media are encouraged to apply. SDA strives to provide a platform for those traditionally marginalized in the fiber arts and encourages entries from members of underrepresented communities.

Eligibility is open to all student artists, defined as someone engaged in a mentor/mentee relationship with a knowledgeable instructor for the purpose of gaining instruction. Up to three pieces may be submitted per artist. 2D, 3D, video, and audio works are eligible. Entries must be original work completed after January 1, 2020. Entry fee is $15 for SDA student members or $20 for non-member students. The entry deadline is April 15, 2022.

Awards include First Place ($300), Second Place ($200), Third Place ($100), and Honorable Mention (SDA Award of Excellence). Award winners will have their work featured in the Summer 2022 Surface Design Journal and will receive one complimentary print copy. Artists must submit up to six images total (full and detail shots), with images at least 1200 pixels on the shortest side, 72 ppi/dpi resolution, JPEG format, and maximum 5 MB file size. Video submissions must not exceed 100 MB and audio submissions must not exceed 10 MB. A brief artist statement of 100-150 words maximum is required. Print quality images at 300 dpi, 6x8" minimum, jpg or Tiff format will be requested for accepted and award-winning works.
