About This Call

Future Tense 2021 is the annual Surface Design Association (SDA) Juried Student Exhibition celebrating the creative work of student artists, designers, and makers working with or inspired by fiber or textile materials or techniques. The exhibition will be held at the Charles W. and Norma C. Carroll Gallery at Marshall University, 927 3rd Avenue, Huntington, WV 25701, from June 14 - July 30, 2021. The exhibition includes awards: First Place $300, Second Place $200, Third Place $100, Honorable Mention, and SDA Award of Excellence.

This exhibition is open to all student artists. Up to three pieces may be submitted per artist. 2D, 3D, video and audio works are eligible. Entries must be original work completed after January 1, 2019. Applicants must provide proof of student status (enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate program at a college or university or other art-based educational program at the time of application). Entry fee: $15 for SDA student members/$20 for non-member students. Work sample requirements: up to 6 images, up to 6 audio files, up to 6 video files, with a minimum of 2 total samples and maximum of 6 total samples. For ceiling suspended work, individual components must not weigh more than 30 lbs and work must not exceed 7'x7'. Artists who have been included in prior SDA exhibits are encouraged to apply, but work should show progression or be from a different body of work. Works previously exhibited with SDA will not be considered. Accepted artwork that differs significantly from the image in online submission may be disqualified. Accepted works must be available for the duration of the exhibition.

Entries are accepted online through CaFÉ from January 15 - April 22, 2021. Notification of acceptance is May 7, 2021. Selected works and exhibition agreement are due at the gallery by June 4, 2021. Artists are responsible for shipping costs both to and from the exhibition (including insurance during transit). Work will be insured while at Marshall University. All artwork must arrive at the Carroll Gallery no later than June 4, 2021. Works will be ready for return shipping to artists no later than August 6, 2021. SDA strives to provide a platform for those traditionally marginalized in the fiber arts and encourages entries from members of underrepresented communities.
