About This Call
The Surface Design Association invites student artists to submit work for the annual SDA Juried Student Exhibition, Future Tense 2020, held at Appalachian Center for Craft Gallery at Tennessee Tech from August 13-October 27, 2020. The exhibition celebrates the creative work of student artists, designers, and makers working with or inspired by fiber or textile materials or techniques. All SDA members and non-member students working in all media are encouraged to apply.
Eligibility: Open to all student artists enrolled in an accredited undergraduate or graduate program at the time of application. Up to three pieces may be submitted per artist. 2D, 3D, video and audio works are eligible. Entries must be original work completed after January 1, 2018. Entry fee: $15 for SDA student members, $20 for non-member students. Work sample requirements: minimum 2 images, maximum 6 total samples (images, audio, or video combined). Images must be JPEG format, no smaller than 1200 pixels on the longest side, 72 ppi/dpi resolution, 5 MB maximum. Video not to exceed 100 MB per sample; audio not to exceed 10 MB. Artists must submit a brief artist statement (100-150 words maximum). Entries are accepted online through CaFÉ from February 10-April 30, 2020.
Jurors: Rena Wood, fiber artist and Assistant Professor at Tennessee Tech University's Appalachian Center for Craft; Stefanie Gerber, Director of the North Carolina Glass Center. Awards: First Place $300, Second Place $200, Third Place $100, and Honorable Mention SDA Award of Excellence. Opening reception: September 10, 2020, 5-7pm. Accepted artwork must be available for the duration of the exhibition. For ceiling suspended work, individual components must not weigh more than 100 lbs. Artists are responsible for shipping costs and insurance both to and from the venue. All artwork must arrive by August 3, 2020. Works will be ready for return shipping no later than November 2, 2020.
