About This Call

This exhibition seeks to highlight artists and artwork styles at the fringes of the canon, exploring new visions and inspirations through the popular styles of graffiti, anime, and manga. The exhibition aims to give a stage to young artists to share their works with the community, creating space for emerging artists to exhibit alongside established artists, supporting budding artistic careers, and building relationships with artists across generations and genres.

Artwork must be created within the past two years and cannot have been previously exhibited at Wailoa Center. Works must be gallery quality and installation ready. All artwork must be family friendly; artwork with sensitive subject matter (nudity, offensive religious or political statements, violence) or NSFW content may be juried out. No AI-generated artwork or fan art will be accepted. Open to all ages and professional levels working in any media (2D, 3D, video, etc.) within the genres of anime, manga, and urban art. 2D works must not exceed 7' tall x 9' wide; 3D works must not exceed 10' tall. Entry fee is $15 per submission, with a maximum of five entries per artist. Works must be for sale; 80% of sales goes to the artist and 20% goes to Hawaii Island Art Alliance.

Exhibition dates are February 2 - March 21, 2024. Opening reception is February 2, 5-7pm, featuring a graffiti battle and DJ. Themed events include an ephemeral mural unveiling with anime viewing and a cosplay fashion show. Artist notification is January 15, 2024. Drop-off for Hilo area is January 27, 10am-1pm at Wailoa Center; Kona drop-off is January 26 at 10am at Akamai Arts Parking Lot. Off-island artwork must be received by January 26. Pick-up is March 22 (Hilo 9am-1pm, Kona 10am). Off-island artwork will be shipped by March 26. Prizes include Juror's Choice ($400), 1st Place Manga/Anime ($300), and 1st Place Urban Art ($300).
