About This Call
Frontier Futurism is a curated exhibition exploring the evolving mythologies of the American West through a contemporary vision, where desert landscapes merge with visions of the future and environmental reflection. The exhibition seeks works from mid-career artists who challenge and reimagine Western narratives through painting, printmaking, sculpture, textile, and mixed media. This exhibition aims to disrupt the hyper-masculine, colonialist tropes embedded in the myth of the West by inviting softer, more expansive visions of the frontier — speculative, queer, diasporic, and ecologically attuned.
Themes may include: new mythologies of the American West, eco-futurism and climate narratives, reimagined wild west in contemporary or minimalistic design, diasporic identities in Western landscapes, post-cowboy iconography, and dream states and desert mysticism. Applications are encouraged from artists of all backgrounds, especially those from historically underrepresented communities.
Entry Deadline: May 24, 2025 at 11:59 p.m. MDT. Notification dates: End of May. Drop-off dates: August 8-10. Exhibition dates: August 13-30, 2025 at Dorado 806 Projects, Santa Monica, California. Entry fee: $35.00 plus $5.00 media fee. Submit 1-3 images of recent work (work must not exceed 24" in all directions and must be professionally wired and ready to hang). Include instagram or website link. Optional: description of how your work engages with exhibition themes (max 150 words). All work must be original, unsold, and the artist must own sole copyright. Accepted media: painting, printmaking, sculpture, textile, and mixed media. No photography or glass media. All artwork selected must remain available for sale for the entirety of the exhibition. Juried by Ruth Price (Desert Design Week).
