About This Call

William King Museum of Art in Abingdon, Virginia announces the 17th biennial exhibition From These Hills: Contemporary Art in the Southern Appalachian Highlands. The juror and guest curator is Kathy Foley, former director of the Leigh Yawkey Woodson Art Museum in Wausau, Wisconsin. The exhibition will be on display at William King Museum of Art from November 13, 2025 through March 15, 2026. Following this exhibition, the work will travel to the Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine in Roanoke for display from April 2026 through August 2026. Artists may request to show their work at the museum only and not at the Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine by stating this in their application.

Eligibility is limited to artists from Southwest Virginia, Northeast Tennessee, Western North Carolina, Southern West Virginia, or Eastern Kentucky. Specific eligible counties are listed for each region. Artists must be 18 years of age or older. The entry fee is $25 (non-refundable). Entries must be submitted by September 12, 2025 at 11:59 p.m. MDT. All artists will be notified of their acceptance status by September 24, 2025. Accepted artists must ship or deliver their work to William King Museum of Art, ATTN: Anna Buchanan, 415 Academy Drive NW, Abingdon, VA 24210 by October 29, 2025. If shipping, artists must provide a prepaid return shipping label inside the box.

Submissions must include 1 to 5 images of artwork (minimum 300 dpi resolution), a brief biography of no more than 1000 words, and an artist statement. Multiple angles of a single work of art are acceptable.
