About This Call
Surface Design Association's 2021 International Exhibition in Print showcases contemporary artists and designers working with fiber and textile-based materials, methods, and techniques. Selected work will be featured in the Fall 2021 issue of Surface Design Journal, which is read by artists, gallery owners, curators, scholars, and enthusiasts nationally and internationally.
The exhibition theme, "From Confrontation to Catharsis," invites artists to give voice to the vulnerabilities of our time—visually channeling fear, doubt, grief, pain, and anger in order to offer a compelling path toward equity, reconciliation, and hope. Artists working in all media are encouraged to apply. Work must have been completed since January 1, 2019. Artists may enter up to three artworks. 2D and 3D works are eligible, as is documentation of time-based media, performance, or conceptual work. Only photographic documentation of work will be considered. Work executed under classroom or educational guidance is not eligible.
Journal Editor Elizabeth Kozlowski and Scholar Keidra Daniels Navaroli will co-jury the exhibition. Selected artists will receive one complimentary print copy of Surface Design Journal. Award categories include: Collaboration and Community, Emerging Artist/Next Generation Award, Fiber Reinterpreted, Guest Juror Award, Modern Meets Tradition, Material Exploration Award, and Textiles and Technology. Award honorees will receive expanded coverage in the journal. Entry deadline is June 1, 2021. Entry fee is $25 for SDA members or $45 for non-members. Submissions are made online through CaFÉ and require up to 6 JPEG images (maximum 2 per artwork), artist statement (100-150 words maximum), and contact information. Artist notification of acceptance is June 21, 2021. Publication date is September 23, 2021.
