About This Call
Chicago Public Art Group (CPAG) in partnership with Friend Health Center and DL3 Realty invites professional artists or artist teams to submit qualifications for two community-engaged public artworks for a new health center located in Chicago's Woodlawn neighborhood at 6250 S. Cottage Grove.
Project 1 is an approximately 2,363 square foot painted mural (acrylic or spray paint) on the exterior walls (south and west sides) of the building. Project 2 is a broken ceramic tile mosaic design for approximately 108 square feet across three cement square planters on the west side near the entrance. Artists may apply to both projects but may be chosen for only one. The partners are looking for two different artists for each project. There is no residency requirement, but preference is given to artists who have lived or worked in the Woodlawn neighborhood area.
Artist fees: Mural $22,000; Mosaic $12,000. Materials and installation costs are budgeted separately. Selected artists will participate in community workshops to finalize design concepts and present 2-3 design drafts to partners and community stakeholders for approval before fabrication. CPAG will manage the project, provide workman's compensation insurance, pay artists in four installments, and handle contracting, materials, community workshops, and installation coordination. Fabrication and installation are scheduled for August 24 through October 31, 2021, with an unveiling ceremony to follow.
Applications must include: a one-page letter of interest explaining the site's significance and initial conceptual ideas; 6-8 images of past work; an annotated image list with title, media, year, dimensions, location, budget, timeline, and commissioning entity for each image; and a two-page resume or CV. Artist teams must provide one resume per team member and list key members with their roles. An info session via Zoom is scheduled for Friday, May 14 at 11 a.m. CST. Contact [email protected] to attend.
