About This Call

The Office of Arts & Cultural Affairs, in partnership with the Seattle Department of Transportation (SDOT), seeks an artist or artist team for an artist residency at the Fremont Bridge. The artist(s) selected will undertake an in-depth exploration of the bridge and create an art project in response to the experience.

The Artist-in-Residence will occupy the Bridge Tower Studio, a 13 feet by 8 feet workspace with 10-foot ceilings, desk, chair, overhead lights, and 360-degree views of the surrounding area. The artist will have access to the studio for two to three months but cannot live in the space. The residency will culminate in the public presentation of an art project produced during the residency. The artist may create work in any media, including video, film, sound, performance, installation or other diverse media. Following public presentation, the artist will provide high-quality documentation of the project for inclusion in the Municipal Art Collection.

Established professional artists living in Seattle or within 100 miles of Seattle are eligible to apply. Two artists may apply as a team. Students are not eligible. The total project budget is $20,000, inclusive of all costs for the residency, art project, public presentation(s), applicable taxes, and documentation. Payment will be made in installments based on benchmarks established in consultation with the artist. The artist will be required to carry commercial general liability insurance for the duration of the residency. Selection will be based on strength and artistic merit of past works, ideas expressed in the letter of intent, consistency with the artist's working methods, and contribution to the diversity of the city's art collection.
