Freedom of Expression

Webster Arts invites art submissions for an all-media exhibition titled Freedom of Expression, running January 2 - February 28, 2019. Artists are asked to respond to themes of censorship, bigotry, free speech, racism, and speaking truth to power found in the play "Alabama Stories," which will be presented by the Repertory Theatre of St. Louis. The play and exhibit will be presented concurrently, sharing audiences. Images of the work in the exhibit will be projected in the lobby of the theatre before performances and during intermission. Artists are encouraged to interpret the theme broadly.

All 2D and 3D media is welcome. Wall pieces must be wired for hanging and no larger than 48" X 48" without prior consultation. Free-standing pieces may not exceed 32" X 32" X 60" or weigh more than 50 lbs. No floor or ceiling hung installations or video are permitted. Work must be the original conception and execution of the artist and not previously exhibited at Webster Arts. Photographs printed on canvas are not allowed without prior permission. Submit up to three JPEG digital images (no larger than 1920 pixels on the longest side, 72 ppi/dpi resolution, 5 MB maximum file size). Entry fee is $30 for up to three entries (non-refundable). The exhibition is open to artists age 18 and older, residing in the US or abroad.

Juror Karen Gutfreund will select work for inclusion and for cash prizes. Artists may be selected for solo or 2-3 person shows in the future. Notification of acceptance will be sent by email on November 26, 2018. Artwork delivery deadline is December 17, 2018 for shipped work or December 10-14 for in-person delivery. The exhibit opening reception is January 8, 2019, 6-7:30 p.m., free and open to the public. Artwork return and pick-up is available March 1 and 4-8, 2019. Webster Arts receives a 30% commission on all exhibition sales.
